Food Bank Operations

Our core program is the food bank.

The majority of our operation is in the acquisition, storage and distribution of donated and purchased food and grocery items.

Food that is donated comes from national manufacturers, regional farmers, other food banks, wholesalers/distributors, local retailers, food drives, and individual donors. We also purchase some foods at a wholesale rate, and distribute USDA Commodities through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) for which we are contracted with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to distribute to our qualifying agencies.

America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend is a member of the Feeding America network, which is the nation’s largest food relief organization comprised of 199 member food banks throughout the country.

Our food distribution is completed through our network of more than 100 partner agencies that feed the hungry through food pantries, soup kitchens and residential programs for people in need. These partner agencies are other non-profits and faith-based organizations that directly serve those in need.  They are located throughout the 11-county region of the Big Bend that we serve, including Leon, Gadsden, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Jefferson, Jackson, Liberty, Taylor, Madison and Wakulla Counties. We deliver to each of these counties at least twice monthly, and agencies can also pick up food at our warehouse.
