Second Helpings

Second Helpings is our Prepared and Perishable Food Rescue Program. A2HBB partners with local grocery stores and restaurants to pick up excess prepared and perishable food that would normally be discarded. We redistribute the food to our partner agencies who can serve it immediately to their clients, be they indigent, homeless, or children in low income assistance programs. Second Helpings is crucial, not only to feed the hungry and reduce food waste in our community, but also to keep the general public aware of our food recovery efforts as our trucks are seen out in the community.

Kids Cafe

Kids Cafe is our opportunity to provide nourishing meals or snacks for children in after school programs in low-income communities. A2HBB provides the food and the programs provide a safe place for guided activities, including tutoring and mentoring. The sites are run by paid staff and/or volunteers from the community.

Brown Bag for the Elderly

Brown Bag for the Elderly is a program for local fixed-income or impoverished seniors. Each month, A2HBB prepares and provides supplemental brown bags of groceries for more than 700 of our community

Under Construction.

Disaster Relief

Disaster Relief is also an important, but hopefully limited, part of our service to the community at large. A2HBB is required by our Affiliate Contract to be part of a team of first responders which includes the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. Our organization helps those on the frontline by providing food, basic necessity items, and water, in addition to some transportation of these items when Red Cross

Volunteer Program

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend. We depend on individuals and groups to help us in our fight against hunger. The time that you donate here at the food bank will go a long way towards helping the men, women, and children of the Big Bend get the help they desperately need. We are always in need of volunteers and anytime that you can spare is time that we can use. Whether it’s just for an hour or a few days a week, you can make a huge contribution to our mission to feed the hungry in the Big Bend Community. The work you will do here at ASHBB can range from sorting donated food, to filling grocery bags for our Brown Bags for the Elderly Program, to helping with administrative task in the front office. No matter the job, your hard work will make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
